Reuters, January 31, 2012: Russia is counting on President Bashar al-Assad keeping his grip on power to see through potential arms contracts worth up to $6 billion (3 billion pounds) and help Moscow reach a record defence export year, according to the CAST defence and security think-tank. Russia has been Assad's main defender as Western and Arab countries push for a U.N. Security Council resolution which would call for him to step down. A veto-wielding permanent member, Russia has already criticised the resolution saying it will lead to civil war. Having lost tens of billions of dollars in arms contracts with Libya after leader Muammar Gaddafi was ousted last year, Moscow is looking to Damascus to maintain a foothold, both politically and economically, in the region. At stake for Russia, the world's no. 2 arms exporter, is billions of dollars in potential and current arms contracts with ally Syria, including deliveries on an order of 24 MiG-29M2 fighter jets signed in 2007. Syria, where Russia maintains a naval base, is also the only ally Russia has left in the Middle East. "(If Assad goes) Russia will lose everything," CAST Director Ruslan Pukhov said - Russia counting on Syria to keep arms exports high - report

The American Interest, February 14, 2012: Russia’s 2008 campaign against Georgia secured the independence of the border regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, but it has curried considerably less favor in the region since then. A New York Times article notes that Russia-backed candidates have lost recent elections in both countries, and only intervention by the Supreme Court prevented an opposition candidate from assuming the presidency in South Ossetia. The campaign’s end may not have been enough for Moscow: "The opposition movement leader in the mountainous enclave of South Ossetia had planned to be inaugurated as its rightful president on Friday in an unauthorized ceremony. Instead, she lay unconscious in a hospital with a possible rifle-butt blow to the head, her aides were under arrest and her organization was in disarray, crushed by police officers apparently acting on the Kremlin’s orders" - Russia Blunders in South Ossetia

Defense News, February 22, 2012: Russia has warned Norway not to get pulled into a possible area of conflict by bowing to U.S. pressure to equip its naval vessels with Aegis ballistic missile defense system missiles. The warning came from Nikolai Makarov, commander of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces. Russia hopes to eliminate this threat through talks and greater transparency and military cooperation with Norway, said Makarov, adding that Russia will not accept U.S. vessels equipped with the Aegis system operating near its Arctic territories or in the Black Sea. “We are aware that the U.S. has been prompting Norway to install the missile defense system on its naval ships. Fortunately, Norway has taken a balanced position,” Makarov said on Feb. 16 - Russia Tells Norway To Keep Aegis BMD System off Vessels

Bloomberg, July 11, 2012: On July 10, the Russian-language Wikipedia greeted its millions of users with a largely blank page and a message asking them to “imagine a world without free knowledge.” The impetus for the web site's one-day protest: Russia's leaders are moving toward the creation of a "great firewall," along Chinese lines, to limit what the country's Internet users can see and read - Russia’s Chinese Wall to Block the Internet

RIA Novosti, February 8, 2013: The number of people who support the Soviet political system has grown in Russia, a survey published by the Russian independent pollster Levada Center found. Today, 36 percent of Russians regard the Soviet system as the best one for the country, compared to 29 percent in 2012. The number of Western democracy supporters has fallen from 29 percent to 22 percent, Levada Center reported. Only 17 percent said they remain loyal to the existing political system, a three percent drop from last year. The survey also posed a question about the economic system. Poll results show that more than half of Russians (51 percent) support an economic model based on state planning (49 percent in 2012). Only 29 percent spoke in favor of private ownership and a free market system (36 percent in 2012) - Number of Soviet System Supporters Grows in Russia – Poll
