RIA Novosti, July 1, 2010: Russia is willing to provide transport helicopters to assist the NATO-led military contingent fighting Taliban militants in Afghanistan, a defense industry official said on Thursday. Vyacheslav Dzirkaln, deputy head of Russia's Federal Service for Military and Technical Cooperation, said Russian An-124 Condor cargo planes had transported over 88,000 metric tons of cargo for NATO troops in Afghanistan under the successful Strategic Airlift Interim Solution (SALIS) project - Russia says ready to send helicopters to help NATO in Afghanistan

Post-Gazette, July 4, 2010: On the edge of this Siberian village is a resort with a veiled guest list and armed guards at the front gate. When local officials have expressed unease about what goes on inside, the reply has always been the same: do not interfere. Two and half years ago, the village's mayor, Tatyana Kazakova, had enough. A major construction project at the resort had exposed a hot water main, threatening the heating supply for the entire village as temperatures plunged to 30 degrees below zero. Ms. Kazakova was not a typical bureaucrat. She was one of the most successful businesswomen in this vast region, a real-estate magnate with a blond ponytail who represented a new breed of Russian entrepreneur. She filed a lawsuit against the resort, and asked the regional prosecutor to open a criminal inquiry. A criminal inquiry was indeed opened -- against Ms. Kazakova. The resort belongs to the F.S.B., the main successor to the Soviet-era K.G.B., and the F.S.B. arrested her and had her prosecuted. She is now on trial in a case that has already become a disquieting example of the power of the security agency in today's Russia. More than 25 agents have delved into every aspect of Ms. Kazakova's life, carrying out what they have termed a "counterintelligence operation." Masked special service officers with automatic weapons have raided her associates' homes. More than 250 witnesses have been interrogated, and 67 volumes of evidence have been amassed, according to the trial records. Even a prominent Kremlin official has declared that Ms. Kazakova is being persecuted, and so has the human rights ombudsman here in Siberia, who is a government official - Russian Mayor Irks Security Agency, and Suffers

RIA Novosti, July 14, 2010: International sanctions against Tehran will not affect Russian-Iranian cooperation, the countries' energy ministers said on Wednesday. On June 9, the UN Security Council passed Resolution 1929 imposing a fourth set of sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program, including tougher financial controls and an expanded arms embargo. "Sanctions will not be a hindrance," Russian Energy Minister Sergei Shmatko said after talks with visiting Iranian Petroleum Minister Masud Mir-Kazemi. "Sanctions are not affecting Iran's economic and industrial development," Mir-Kazemi said echoing Schmatko's remarks. "Truly independent countries cooperate with Iran," he added. Shmatko said Russian companies were ready to supply oil products to Iran. The two parties adopted a joint statement approving a "roadmap" for oil and gas projects, agreed to study the possibility of establishing a joint bank to finance those projects and work out mechanisms to use national currencies - Sanctions no impediment to Russia-Iran cooperation - ministers

En svært kald vinter etterfulgt av en varm sommer og tørke truer den russiske kornhøsten:

AFP, July 23, 2010: Twenty three regions in Russia are in a state of emergency because of extreme drought. Since the start of the summer, record-breaking temperatures have caused crop devastation across the country -- a disaster for farmers that has repercussions on the global market too, since Russia is one of the world's largest exporter of cereals - Russia swelters in record-breaking drought

Reuters, August 1, 2010: Police arrested anti-Kremlin opposition leader Boris Nemtsov in Moscow and at least 95 others on Saturday at demonstrations in cities across Russia against restrictions on freedom of assembly. In St. Petersburg, Russia's second largest city, 60 of about 200 people were arrested in what Reuters witnesses said was one of the most violent recent crackdowns on protesters. Reuters reporters said some of the detained had bloody noses while others had their heads beaten against police buses. "Putin is the butcher of freedom," protesters in the northern city shouted as the detainees were taken away, directing their anger at Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. Opposition activists traditionally stage demonstrations on the 31st day of those months that have 31 days to defend article 31 of the constitution, which guarantees the right to public gathering. In the cities where the rallies took place activists chanted "Russia will be free," which has become a symbolic chant - Russia police arrest Kremlin critic during protest

Georgian Daily, August 2, 2010: Moscow media have been devoting enormous attention to the nearly 100,000 US documents leaked to the Wikileaks portal, but they have passed over in silence the leak of FSB documents earlier this summer, allowing the Russian powers that be time to plug that leak by shutting down the site. Al Arabiya, August 11, 2010: Russian oil giant LUKOIL has resumed gasoline sales into Iran in partnership with China's state-run firm Zhuhai Zhenrong, even as the United States urges the international community to be tough with Tehran. In July, Russia's energy minister Sergei Shmatko said Russian companies would be ready to supply fuel to Iran if there were commercial interest and attractive terms. The Sydney Morning Herald, August 23, 2010: Russian journalist Ilya Barabanov, who has worked to expose official corruption, was awarded the Peter Mackler Award honoring courageous journalism Sunday, Reporters Without Borders announced. Barabanov is deputy editor of The New Times, an opposition news weekly in Russia which has been searched and sued by the Russian government after critical stories. Reporters Without Borders said Barabanov's nomination comes amid growing accusations of Internet censorship and media intimidation in Russia. "We are delighted to know this award goes to Ilya Barabanov," Jean-Francois Julliard, Secretary General of Reporters Without Borders, said. The Daily Telegraph, August 27, 2010: A specially upgraded Russian Akula class submarine has been caught trying to record the acoustic signature made by the Vanguard submarines that carry Trident nuclear missiles, according to senior Navy officers. British submariners have also reported that they are experiencing the highest number of "contacts" with Russian submarines since 1987. Navy commanders are understood to have ordered a Trafalgar-class hunter-killer submarine to protect the Vanguard. "The Russians have been playing games with us, the Americans and French in the North Atlantic," a senior Navy commander said. "We have put a lot of resources into protecting Trident because we cannot afford by any stretch to let the Russians learn the acoustic profile of one of our bombers as that would compromise the deterrent" - Russian subs stalk Trident in echo of Cold War

Haaretz, August 30, 2010: Despite Israel's objections, Russia will not cancel its sale of advanced missiles to Syria, the Kremlin announced on Sunday. Haaretz reported on Friday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had asked his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, to cancel the sale of long-range surface-to-sea cruise missiles to the Syrian Army. Following the Haaretz report, Sergei Prikhodko, a senior adviser to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, told the state-run Russian news agency RIA Novosti that Moscow would fulfill all agreements it had made with foreign countries and would not halt the deal. "Lately, some Israeli media outlets have been actively disseminating information distorting Russia's position on the implementation of its obligations to Syria, including in the sphere of military and technical cooperation," Prikhodko said. "I would like to stress that the Russian Federation honors all the agreements that were previously signed between Russia and Syria" - Despite Israeli protests, Russia won't halt arms sale to Syria

The Wall Street Journal, September 1, 2010: Police sealed off a central Moscow square and skirmished with anti-Kremlin activists Tuesday evening, detaining at least three Russian opposition leaders and dozens of followers. At least 160 protesters were hauled onto police buses in Moscow and St. Petersburg, police said, during the latest in a year-old series of rallies demanding freedom of assembly. Rallies have been held at Triumfalnaya Square since July of last year on the 31st of each 31-day month, a date symbolizing the right to free assembly guaranteed by Article 31 of Russia's constitution. Authorities routinely deny permission for the rallies and send police to break them up. Prime Minister Putin defended the crackdowns in a newspaper interview published Monday, saying protesters need approval to gather. The New York Post, September 1, 2010: Russia's finance minister Alexei Kudrin urged citizens Wednesday to smoke and drink more to help lift tax revenues for spending on social services. "If you smoke a pack of cigarettes, that means you are giving more to help solve social problems such as boosting demographics, developing other social services and upholding birth rates," Kudrin said, quoted by the Interfax news agency. "People should understand: Those who drink, those who smoke are doing more to help the state," he said. VOANews, September 2, 2010: An editor for an outspoken Russian opposition magazine known for its coverage of police abuses says masked officers have raided the publication’s Moscow offices. Ilya Barabanov, deputy editor of the weekly New Times, said police told him Thursday they were conducting a probe. Barabanov, speaking as police gathered outside the offices, said the authorities did not specify what they are investigating. The raid is the second in four months targeting the magazine. The first came in April, after a libel action was filed against the magazine following its investigation into alleged abuses by Moscow’s much-feared riot police, known as OMON. Those published reports sparked calls for law enforcement reform and led Russian President Dmitri Medvedev to fire several high-ranking police officials. Last month, the press freedom group Reporters Without Borders cited editor Barabanov for his “courageous and ethical journalism” in exposing official corruption and abuses - Russian Police Raid Opposition Magazine

Haaretz, September 6, 2010: Defense Minister Ehud Barak met Monday in Russia with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and with the country's defense minister, Anatoly Serdyukov. Following that meeting, a statement said the two discussed the entire range of security and diplomatic issues, but no details were provided. The Putin meeting was preceded by talks in Moscow between Barak and the Russian defense minister at which the two signed an agreement that lays the groundwork for Russian-Israeli military cooperation for the first time. The agreement provides for joint weapon development and exchange of information on terrorism issues. According to defense sources, Barak asked his Russian hosts not to sell Iran S-300 anti-aircraft missiles, which could greatly enhance the Iranians' aerial defense capabilities and complicate a possible attack on Iran, Israel is also trying to convince Russia not to sell Syria P-800 "Yakhont" supersonic naval cruise missiles, which is capable of precisely targeting ships. After signing the military cooperation deal with Barak on Monday, Serdyukov suggested that the framework would lead to further purchases of Israeli weapons and technology. "We have just signed a long-term agreement on military cooperation," Serdyukov said. The ministry did not reveal details of the agreement - Israel urges Russia: Halt sale of missiles to Syria and Iran
