The Independent, February 10, 2010: Angela Merkel's government was facing a massive new bill for the country's welfare state yesterday, after Germany's highest court declared the benefits system unconstitutional. The verdict on the programme, Germany's biggest and possibly most unpopular post-war social reform project, was handed down by judges who concluded it was in breach of the constitution because it failed to ensure its 6.7 million recipients received a "dignified minimum income." Chancellor Merkel could be forced to make significant increases in welfare payments that already cost taxpayers billions. The court gave Ms Merkel's government until the end of the year to come up with a new system to replace the five-year-old social benefit payment programme, known as Hartz IV, by January 2011. The ruling was expected to oblige her coalition to make significant increases on the €41.1bn (£36bn) it has set aside in its €328bn budget this year for Hartz IV payments. The court also ruled that urgent cases must be dealt with immediately. Germany is burdened with a €100bn deficit - Merkel handed massive bill as court strikes down benefits system

BBC News, June 24, 2010: German police are investigating the stoning of a Jewish dance group trying to perform on the street in the city of Hanover. Youths reportedly shouted "Juden Raus" (Jews Out) as they attacked the dancers of the Chaverim ("Friends" in Hebrew) dance troupe last weekend. Police said several Muslim immigrant youths were among the attackers and two youths were being questioned. A German Jewish leader said she feared growing anti-Israeli sentiment. The group was trying to perform in Hanover's Sahlkamp district, which has a large immigrant community. One of the dancers was injured in the leg and the troupe cancelled the performance after the attack. Police said one German suspect aged 14 and a 19-year-old of North African origin were being questioned. Alla Volodarska, of the Progressive Jewish community of Hanover, told Associated Press news agency she had spoken to the dancers involved. "What happened is just so awful. The teenagers started throwing stones the moment our dance group was announced, even before they started dancing." Charlotte Knobloch, president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, told the Die Welt newspaper that anti-Semitic feelings were widespread in both far-right and Muslim communities in the country. "It particularly saddens me that those anti-Semitic views can already be seen with such vehemence among children and youths," she said - Jewish dance group stoned in Hanover, Germany

Mail Online, June 30, 2010: A German man is facing up to six months in jail for having a speech by Adolf Hitler as his mobile phone ringtone. The 54-year-old had a Hitler speech - in which the Fuhrer pledged the 'destruction of world Jewry' if Germany was 'dragged' into war - programmed into his Nokia phone. Passengers aboard a train in Hamburg heard the bizarre ringtone several times during a journey and reported him to police who seized him when the train stopped. Police also found swastika stickers and a photo of Hitler on the telephone with the words: 'The greatest commander of all time'. He was charged with violating the German constitution which expressly forbids public displays of the Nazis and all their works - German man facing jail for having Hitler speech as his mobile ringtone

Den tyske sosialdemokraten Thilo Sarrazin skaper overskrifter:

The Sydney Morning Herald, August 30, 2010: German government leaders have condemned a central bank executive for making anti-Semitic remarks before the publication of his book today that takes a critical look at Turk and Arab immigrants. "All Jews share a particular gene, Basques share a certain gene that sets them apart," Mr Sarrazin told Welt am Sonntag newspaper ahead of the release of his book "Deutschland schafft sich ab." Mr Sarrazin, a Bundesbank board member, denied he was stirring racism. He has faced heavy criticism for making disparaging comments about Muslim immigrants. Mr Sarrazin has repeatedly created uproar for criticising Turks and Arabs in Germany. In the book, Mr Sarrazin argues that Muslims undermine German society, marry "imported brides" and have a bad attitude. He said young Muslim men were aggressive due to sexual frustration. "Sadly, the huge potential for aggression in this group is obvious. The Arab boys can't get at their Arab girls," he said. "In the end, they use the German girls from the underclass who are easier to get, and then they hold them in contempt because they're so readily available" - Furore as German banker attacks Jews, Muslims

Spiegel Online, September 7, 2010: A group of American investors have filed several lawsuits to pressure Germany to honor bonds issued by the Weimar Republic. Hitler banned repayment of the bonds and Berlin says a deadline for registering the bonds passed decades ago. Should Germany lose, it could cost the country billions. The sale of the bonds by the Weimar government brought in hundreds of millions of dollars, as investors believed they were safe. But when Hitler came to power in 1933, he declared the certificates invalid. The bonds lost their value, making it easy for Nazi Germany to buy them up on the cheap - US Investors Sue Germany Over Weimar-Era Bonds

The Local, September 30, 2010: According to the Allensbach poll commissioned by the Financial Times Deutschland, 55 percent judged that the migrant group “has cost significantly more financially and socially than it has yielded economically.” Only one fifth of respondents believed Muslim immigrants were more a benefit than a burden. The skepticism is particularly strong in the former east of the country, where 74 percent of respondents saw Muslims as a drain on the nation. In the former west, the figure was 50 percent. Furthermore, more than one third of the population believes Germany is indeed becoming “dumber on average” because of immigration, as former Bundesbank board member Thilo Sarrazin has controversially claimed. Migrants were poorly educated and had more children, many respondents said. In the former east, 37 percent of people believed this to be the case, compared with 33 percent who rejected the proposition. Sarrazin, who sparked a tumultuous debate about immigration last month – and lost his job in the process – has claimed among other things that many Muslims do not want to integrate with German society and, on the whole, make the country dumber. Some 60 percent of respondents to the poll believed Sarrazin was generally right, while just 13 percent rejected his theses altogether - Most Germans see Muslims as a burden

Deutsche Welle, October 10, 2010: Fresh fuel was added to Germany's ongoing integration debate over the weekend when Horst Seehofer, premier of the state of Bavaria, said Germany should not accept any more Muslim or Arab immigrants. On the heels of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin, in which the German leader reiterated that negotiations for EU membership for Turkey remained "open-ended with no guarantees," Seehofer called for excluding some groups of immigrants from Germany. "It is clear that immigrants from other cultural circles, like Turkey or Arabic countries, have a hard time," he told the weekly news magazine Focus. "That leads me to the conclusion that we do not need any more migrants from other cultural circles." At a regional party conference, Seehofer also declared that the Green party's concept of multiculturalism had failed. "Reality has taught us multi-culti is dead," he said - State leader wants Germany to close doors to Muslim immigrants

BBC News, October 17, 2010: Attempts to build a multicultural society in Germany have "utterly failed", Chancellor Angela Merkel says. In a speech in Potsdam, she said the so-called "multikulti" concept - where people would "live side-by-side" happily - did not work. Mrs Merkel's comments come amid recent outpourings of strong anti-immigrant feeling from mainstream politicians. A recent survey showed that more than 30% of Germans believed Germany was "overrun by foreigners". The study - by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation think-tank - also showed that roughly the same number thought that some 16 million of Germany's immigrants or people with foreign origins had come to the country for the social benefits - Merkel says German multicultural society has failed

Spiegel Online, November 17, 2010: Support for Germany's Greens has surged to record highs thanks to discontent with Angela Merkel's government. This former motley crew of rebels is now a mainstream party adept at milking its ethical image and its protest roots. Its opportunistic policy U-turns and self-contradictions are going unnoticed. Three decades ago, the Greens were a radical minority bent on shaking up German politics. Now they're a firm part of the mainstream. No other party has been pronounced dead so often. "The Greens?" Presseurop (Süddeutsche Zeitung), February 15, 2011: In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in northern Germany right-wing extremists dominate entire villages. A few people go against the flow – and find the struggle a lonely one. For the Lohmeyers it was a good week in Jamel, which was unusual. On Sunday the police moved in with a special task force and arrested their worst neighbour. As of Tuesday the brass plaque is gone from the entrance to the hamlet. “The community of Jamel: Free, Social, National” was etched on the plaque to leave visitors in no doubt as to who has the last word here. And the wooden signposts showing the way to Braunau, the birthplace of Adolf Hitler, had to be taken down finally by order of the municipal office. Outwardly at least, Jamel looks again like a normal hamlet in Mecklenburg – and not like the Nazi stronghold that it still is - The Nazi next door

Presseurop, March 29, 2011: "Economy in state of shock," headlines Handelsblatt, two days after the Alliance '90/Greens victory in the Baden-Württemberg state election. Right up until polling day, entrepreneurs in the German Land, which is a national leader in nuclear power generation but also in the car and machine tools industries, campaigned on behalf of conservative candidates. Their fear that a change in the state government would bring about an end to corporate friendly polices was justified, remarks the economic daily, which explains that the impact of the "Green wave" will not be limited to Baden-Württemberg: "The new German Leitkultur [dominant culture] is staunchly anti-nuclear, marked by pacifism and mistrustful of large-scale projects. Major energy companies can expect to see a significant devaluation of their capital."
