Bloomberg, November 15, 2011: The U.S. Air Force has taken delivery of a new 30,000-pound bomb from Boeing Co. (BA) that’s capable of penetrating deeply buried enemy targets. The huge bunker buster, dubbed the Massive Ordnance Penetrator, is built to fit the B-2 stealth bomber. The Air Force Global Strike Command started receiving the bombs in September, Air Force spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Jack Miller said in a short statement to Bloomberg News. The deliveries “will meet requirements for the current operational need,” he said. [...] The bomb is the U.S. military’s largest conventional penetrator. It’s six times bigger than the 5,000-pound bunker buster that the Air Force now uses to attack deeply buried nuclear, biological or chemical sites - B-2 Bomber Gets Boeing’s New 30,000-Pound Bunker-Buster Bomb

Los Alamos National Laboratory: The weapons programs at Los Alamos have one principal mission: ensure the safety, security, and effectiveness of nuclear weapons in our nation's enduring stockpile. One critical component of this mission is DARHT, the Dual-Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test facility. DARHT consists of two large x-ray machines that produce freeze-frame radiographs (high-powered x-ray images) of materials that implode at speeds greater than 10,000 miles an hour. Such radiographs help scientists ensure that weapons in the stockpile are safe and effective and that—if ever necessary—they will perform as designed - DARHT A Critical Component of Stockpile Stewardship

Norsk teknologibedrift skal levere nano-UAV til det engelske forsvaret:

Jack Silkstone, November 23, 2011: The Ministry of Defence has just awarded a contract to Prox Dynamics to provide lightweight nano-UAVs for urgent deployment to Afghanistan. The device selected is the PD-100 Personal Reconnaissance System and comes packaged inside a base station that holds three UAVs and weighs less than kilo. The idea is an operator can fly one of these UAVs into a building to identify civilians, terrorists, IEDs or other threats. It’s still early days for this technology and although the MoD contract specifies Night Vision this is yet to be featured on the PD-100. However GPS navigation and a live-video feed in a matchbox-sized package is impressive and it’s only a matter of time before these are able to see in the dark. Odds are they’re going to get even smaller, not to mention that basic reconnaissance is just the beginning - Nano-UAVs snapped up by the UK MoD

University of Michigan College of Engineering, November 22, 2011: Research conducted at the University of Michigan College of Engineering may lead to the use of insects to monitor hazardous situations before sending in humans. Professor Khalil Najafi, the chair of electrical and computer engineering, and doctoral student Erkan Aktakka are finding ways to harvest energy from insects, and take the utility of the miniature cyborgs to the next level. "Through energy scavenging, we could potentially power cameras, microphones and other sensors and communications equipment that an insect could carry aboard a tiny backpack," Najafi said. "We could then send these 'bugged' bugs into dangerous or enclosed environments where we would not want humans to go" - Insect cyborgs may become first responders, search and monitor hazardous environs

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, November 30, 2011: The Air Force Research Laboratory and Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase III industry partner Electrodynamics Associates, Inc. demonstrated a multi-megawatt, high speed (15,000 rpm) generator to 25 members of industry and the Department of Defense. The demonstration showed 10X power improvement for its weight/package (under 500 lbs) over existing state-of-the-art generators. The generator is intended to supply power through a compact package for directed energy applications and for supplying megawatt power to aircraft with increasing load and mission requirements. The generator's rated peak power is 2.5MW - Lightweight Megawatt Generator Comes Through in Demonstration

Technology Review, December 5, 2011: A new nanostructured coating could be used to make paints for stealth aircraft that can't be seen at night and that are undetectable by radar at any time of day. The coating, made of carbon nanotubes, can be used to cloak an object in utter darkness, making it indistinguishable from the night sky - Nano Paint Could Make Airplanes Invisible to Radar

Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division, December 6, 2011: Military, government and industry officials watched the demonstration of a revolutionary material that increases the explosive force and lethality on enemy targets during a test at Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Dahlgren, Va., Dec. 2. The test material, called High-Density Reactive Material (HDRM), is designed to replace steel in warhead casings with little or no compromise in strength or design. “Today’s test demonstrates this new material’s potential and the ability of NAVSEA Warfare Center engineers and scientists to move it from the laboratory to full scale working prototype in under a year to meet technology development goals,” said NSWC Dahlgren Division Commander Capt. Michael Smith - New material’s capability to increase weapons’ explosive force demonstrated at Navy test range

Lockheed Martin har så smått begynt å planlegge arvtageren til F-22 Raptor:

The DEW Line, January 4, 2012: ...it is time to start looking at the technologies that will provide the next quantum leap in capabilities for the next generation of fighters (IOC ~ 2030+). Simply removing the pilot from an aircraft or introducing incremental improvements in signature and range does not constitute a generational leap in capability. These improvements are already being looked at for our 5th generation fighters. Future fighter requirements are not set and will depend on assessments of future threats that may emerge in the 2030 time frame. Greatly increased speed, longer range, extended loiter times, multi-spectral stealth, ubiquitous situation awareness, and self-healing structures and systems are some of the possible technologies we envision for the next generation of fighter aircraft. Next generation fighter capabilities will be driven by game changing technological breakthroughs in the areas of propulsion, materials, power generation, sensors, and weapons that are yet to be fully imagined - PICTURE: Lockheed reveals concept aircraft for post-F-22 replacement

DARPA forsker på nye brannslukkingsmetoder:

DARPA, January 20, 2012: DARPA's Instant Fire Suppression (IFS) program, which ended recently, sought to establish the feasibility of a novel flame-suppression system based on destabilization of flame plasma with electromagnetic fields and acoustics techniques. The DARPA research team at Harvard University has demonstrated suppression of small methane and related fuel fires by using a hand-held electrode, or wand. “We’ve made scientific breakthroughs in our understanding and quantification of the interaction between electromagnetic and acoustic waves with flame plasma” - DARPA developing novel new fire suppression method

Sandia National Laboratories, January 30, 2012: Take two Sandia National Laboratories engineers who are hunters, get them talking about the sport and it shouldn’t be surprising when the conversation leads to a patented design for a self-guided bullet that could help war fighters. (Click here for a video showing the prototype’s flight.) Sandia researchers Red Jones and Brian Kast and their colleagues have invented a dart-like, self-guided bullet for small-caliber, smooth-bore firearms that could hit laser-designated targets at distances of more than a mile (about 2,000 meters). “We have a very promising technology to guide small projectiles that could be fully developed inexpensively and rapidly,” Jones said - Sandia’s self-guided bullet prototype can hit target a mile away

DARPA, January 31, 2012: Currently being developed by DARPA researchers at Washington-based Innovega iOptiks are contact lenses that enhance normal vision by allowing a wearer to view virtual and augmented reality images without the need for bulky apparatus. Instead of oversized virtual reality helmets, digital images are projected onto tiny full-color displays that are very near the eye. These novel contact lenses allow users to focus simultaneously on objects that are close up and far away - DARPA researchers design eye-enhancing virtual reality contact lenses
