Fysikk

Berkeley Lab Computing Sciences, August 9, 2010: Particle accelerators like the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN are the big rock stars of high-energy physics—really big. The LHC cost nearly USD$10 billion to build and its largest particle racetrack (27 km in circumference) stretches across a national border. However, a recent breakthrough in computer modeling may help hasten the day when accelerators thousands of times more powerful can be built in a fraction of the space—and for significantly less money. Researchers computing at the National Energy Research Scientific Computing (NERSC) Center have sped up by a factor of hundreds the modeling, and thus the design of experimental laser wakefield accelerators. The team, lead by principal investigator Warren Mori of the University of California at Los Angeles and his collaborator Luis Silva of the Instituto Superior Tecnico (IST) in Lisbon, Portugal, published its findings in Nature Physics in April. Laser wakefield acceleration works by shooting powerful laser pulses through a cloud of ionized gas (plasma). The pulse creates a wave (or wake) on which introduced electrons "surf," much as human surfers ride ocean waves. Using this method, researchers have demonstrated acceleration gradients 1,000 times greater than conventional methods - Taking the 'Large' out of Large Hadron Collider

This 3D simulation shows how laser pulses create plasma wakes that propel
electrons forward, much as a surfer is propelled forward by an ocean wave.

Laser wakefield acceleration promises electron accelerators that are
thousands of times more powerful than, yet a fraction the size of,
conventional radio frequency devices.

University of Otago, September 27, 2010: In a major physics breakthrough with international significance, University of Otago scientists have developed a technique to consistently isolate and capture a fast-moving neutral atom – and have also seen and photographed this atom for the first time. The entrapment of the Rubidium 85 atom is the result of a three-year research project funded by the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology, and has already prompted world-wide interest in the new science which will flow from the breakthrough. A team of four researchers from Otago’s Physics Department, led by Dr Mikkel F. Andersen, used laser cooling technology to dramatically slow a group of rubidium 85 atoms. A laser-beam, oroptical tweezers, was then deployed to isolate and hold one atom - at which point it could be photographed through a microscope - Atom breakthrough represents “dream of scientists”

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, October 26, 2010: A team of scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has detected six isotopes, never seen before, of the superheavy elements 104 through 114. Starting with the creation of a new isotope of the yet-to-be-named element 114, the researchers observed successive emissions of alpha particles that yielded new isotopes of copernicium (element 112), darmstadtium (element 110), hassium (element 108), seaborgium (element 106), and rutherfordium (element 104). Rutherfordium ended the chain when it decayed by spontaneous fission - Six New Isotopes of the Superheavy Elements Discovered

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, November 12, 2010: Since one of the best ways to study nuclei is to catch the gamma rays they emit as they spin or undergo transmutations, gamma-ray detectors hold the keys to understanding not only nucleosynthesis in stars and supernovae but artificial superheavy elements as well. With a little help from its friends in universities and national laboratories, Berkeley Lab builds some of the best gamma-ray detectors in the world. The Gammasphere now at Argonne National Laboratory, the world’s most powerful spectrometer for research in nuclear structure, was built here, and a far more sensitive and precise detector named GRETINA, now being assembled, is gradually taking up occupancy in Cave 4C at the 88-Inch Cyclotron - GRETINA Moves Into Its Cave

CERN, December 15, 2010: The Large Hadron Collider has completed a search for microscopic black holes produced in high-energy proton-proton collisions. No experimental evidence for microscopic black holes has been found. Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen, December 21, 2010: Researchers from the Quantum Photonics Group at DTU Fotonik in collaboration with the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen surprise the scientific world with the discovery that light emission from solid-state photon emitters, the so-called quantum dots, is fundamentally different than hitherto believed. The new insight may find important applications as a way to improve efficiency of quantum information devices. Their findings are published on December 19th 2010 in the prestigious journal Nature Physics. This new insight was realized by experimentally recording photon emission from quantum dots positioned close to a metallic mirror - Quantum dots are not dots

New Scientist, June 1, 2011: If physicists weren't jumping up and down with excitement in April at the announcement that an unknown particle had been glimpsed at Fermilab, they are now. The news of a possible particle sighting in the debris of proton-antiproton collisions at the Illinois accelerator had been met with a mix of curiosity and scepticism. It was based on an analysis of eight years of data collected by Fermilab's CDF experiment that looked at collisions that produced a W boson, carrier of the weak nuclear force, along with two jets of quarks. A suspicious bump in the data showed an unexpected rise in the number of these events clustered around 145 GeV – suggesting that they are being produced by an unidentified particle of the same mass. It was immediately clear that whatever the particle was, it was not predicted by the standard model of physics, the leading theory for how particles and forces interact. To add to the mystery, it was clearly not a Higgs boson, the long-sought particle that gives other particles their mass - Tevatron's mystery signal grows stronger with more data

Rice University, January 24, 2012: Rice University physicists have gone to extremes to prove that Isaac Newton's classical laws of motion can apply in the atomic world: They've built an accurate model of part of the solar system inside a single atom of potassium. In a new paper published this week in Physical Review Letters, Rice's team and collaborators at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Vienna University of Technology showed they could cause an electron in an atom to orbit the nucleus in precisely the same way that Jupiter's Trojan asteroids orbit the sun. The findings uphold a prediction made in 1920 by famed Danish physicist Niels Bohr about the relationship between the then-new science of quantum mechanics and Newton's tried-and-true laws of motion - Rice lab mimics Jupiter's Trojan asteroids inside a single atom

Physorg, March 13, 2012: Using an experimental apparatus reminiscent of a classic Frankenstein movie, French researchers have coaxed laboratory-generated lightning into striking the same place, not just twice, but over and over. This feat of electrical reorientation used femtosecond (one quadrillionth of a second) pulses of laser light to create a virtual lightning rod out of a column of ionized gas. This is the first time that these laser-induced atmospheric filaments were able to redirect an electrical discharge away from its intended target and guide it to a normally less-attractive electrode - Laser lightning rod: Guiding bursts of electricity with a flash of light
