This transformation can be achieved in a matter of seconds through changes in the electron structure of a material; thus hard and brittle matter, for example, can become soft and malleable. Reuters, June 30, 3011: Researchers in Japan have developed a superelastic alloy, which can spring back to its original form in extreme temperatures, they said in a report on Friday, adding that they hope it may be used in buildings to absorb shocks from earthquakes. The experts, who wrote about their invention in the journal Science, added a small amount of nickel to an iron-based alloy, and found that the new material can recover its original shape at any temperature from -196 to 240 degrees Celsius. Lead author Toshihiro Omori at the Department of Materials Science, Graduate School of Engineering in Tohoku University, said this new material was far more elastic than other superelastic alloys, which cannot revert to their original form outside the -20 to 80 degrees Celsius range - Japan experts design superelastic alloy, may resist quakes

Stanford University, July 25, 2011: It sounds like something out of a cheesy science fiction movie, but thanks to new research by several Stanford scientists, transparent cell phones are one step closer to becoming a reality. Several companies have successfully created partially transparent gadgets such as digital photo frames and cell phones with see-through keyboards. However, fully transparent e-book readers or cell phones have remained largely in the realm of conceptual art due to one last missing puzzle piece - Stanford transparent batteries: seeing straight through to the future?

Duke University, August 1, 2011: Duke electrical engineers have developed a man-made material that they say literally allows them to manipulate light at will. They say that the results of their latest proof-of-concept experiments could lead to the replacement of electrical components with those based on optical technologies, which should allow for faster and more efficient transmission of information, much in the same way that replacing wires with optical fibers revolutionized the telecommunications industry. University of St Andrews, August 9, 2011: An undergraduate student from the University of St Andrews has overcome a major hurdle in the development of invisibility cloaks. Under the guidance of leading St Andrews’ invisibility expert Professor Ulf Leonhardt, Janos Perczel has designed an ‘invisible sphere’ that could allow an invisibility cloak wearer to move around amongst ever-changing backgrounds. The key development lies in the ability of the sphere - an optical device – to not only remain invisible itself, but to slow down light. Previously light rays have been accelerated around cloaked objects at great speeds, limiting invisibility cloaks to only work in a specified region of the visible spectrum. Laboratoire d'Analyse et d'Architecture des Systèmes, October 26, 2011: A solid explosive with an energy density equivalent to that of nitroglycerine: this is the composite material produced by researchers at the Laboratoire d'Analyse et d'Architecture des Systèmes (CNRS) in Toulouse, in collaboration with the Centre Interuniversitaire de Recherche et d'Ingénierie des Matériaux (Université Toulouse 3 / INP Toulouse / CNRS), using an innovative production process that brings nanoparticles into contact with strands of DNA. These strands then "assemble" the various kinds of nanoparticles used. The released energy and ignition temperature of the new explosive are among the best ever described in the literature. The explosive could thus be used as an energy source to power embedded systems, both in space and in the environment. This innovative material is the subject of a paper published online in the journal Advanced Functional Materials - Explosive composite based on nanoparticles and DNA could be an energy source for embedded microsystems

NASA, November 8, 2011: NASA engineers have produced a material that absorbs on average more than 99 percent of the ultraviolet, visible, infrared, and far-infrared light that hits it -- a development that promises to open new frontiers in space technology. The team of engineers at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., reported their findings recently at the SPIE Optics and Photonics conference, the largest interdisciplinary technical meeting in this discipline. The team has since reconfirmed the material's absorption capabilities in additional testing, said John Hagopian, who is leading the effort involving 10 Goddard technologists. "The reflectance tests showed that our team had extended by 50 times the range of the material’s absorption capabilities. Though other researchers are reporting near-perfect absorption levels mainly in the ultraviolet and visible, our material is darn near perfect across multiple wavelength bands, from the ultraviolet to the far infrared," Hagopian said.
