Mail Online, November 11, 2010: China could overtake America as the world’s biggest economy within two years, according to a leading financial think tank. As growth in the U.S. slows down to a virtual standstill, China’s economy is revving up into double digits, the Conference Board said in a report published today. In purely dollar terms, it is going to take much longer than two years for China’s $5 trillion economy to match up to the $15 trillion output in the US. Even if the Chinese can sustain their current growth, it would take another ten years. But in terms of purchasing power, taking into account the goods and services a country actually buys at home, China is well on its way to outstripping its fading competitor - China could overtake U.S. as the world's economic powerhouse within two years, says think tank

Aviation Week, November 10, 2010: China is studying a rocket engine with thrusts of 300-500 tons (660,000-1.1 million lb.), up to four times as powerful as its current equipment, while also working on reusable space launchers, senior leaders have told a U.S. industry delegation. The pace of Chinese launches is accelerating, says Yang Baohua, president of spacecraft-builder Cast. China has launched 11 satellites this year, has two at their launch sites preparing to go and will follow them with one more, making it 14 for the year. Next year it will launch 20, he says. Yang made the remarks to the first trade delegation to China organized by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics—which was warmly received by the Chinese, eager to enhance relations, even though U.S. law continues to forbid technical ties between the two national industries - China Studying 1-Million-Lb.-Thrust Engine

Only in China:

Yahoo! News, November 12, 2010: A construction crew in the south-central Chinese city of Changsha has completed a 15-story hotel in just six days. The work crew erected the hotel -- a soundproofed, thermal-insulated structure reportedly built to withstand a magnitude 9 earthquake -- with all prefabricated materials. Despite the frenetic pace of construction, no workers were injured -- and thanks to the prefab nature of the process, the builders wasted very few construction materials - Chinese workers build 15-story hotel in just six days

Yahoo! Finance, March 14, 2011: Ending a 110-year run for America as the world's dominant producer, China has overtaken the United States as the world's largest manufacturer. According to economics research firm IHS Global Insight, China manufactured 19.9% of the world's goods in 2010, while the U.S. accounted for 19.4%. This marks the first time since 1850 that China has held the crown as the world's largest manufacturer, the latest sign of the nation's economic resurgence - China Ends America's Century Old Manufacturing Dominance

Presseurop, June 15, 2011: “China is buying up Germany’s companies”, writes the Financial Times Deutschland, noting that rarely have Chinese firms carried out so many mergers with German companies – seven so far in 2011. Experts believe that transactions totalling billions of euros will not be long in coming. China is seeking to buy up technological expertise in Europe, a market seen as less protected than the U.S. In Germany, where Chinese direct investment doubled between 2006 and 2009 to €629 billion, Beijing's strategists are interested in “new technologies, the financial sector and the automotive industry” - Who's afraid of big bad China?

The Australian, July 4, 2011: A cargo train laden with the products of some of China's most advanced factories has begun an epic journey west from the gargantuan city of Chongqing - marking the official opening of a trade corridor designed by the Chinese Government to reroute the flow of global commerce. Some 13 days and 11,179km later, the containers of LCD television screens and laptop computers will arrive in Duisburg, Germany, extending the logistical reach of Chinese industry deeper into the heart of Europe than ever before. [...] Five territories - the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus and Poland - will be crossed as the train makes its way between China and Germany, shifting goods in about a third of the time they would take by container ship, and at a far lower price - Chongqing-Duisburg rail route brings China products to heart of Europe

International Data Corporation, August 23, 2011: Final results from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker show that PC shipments in the China market have exceeded those of the United States in the second quarter of 2011 (2Q11). Approximately 18.5 million units worth US$11.9 billion shipped in China during the quarter, compared to 17.7 million units worth US$11.7 billion in the U.S. China represented 22% of the global PC market's unit shipments compared to the US at 21%. On a full year basis, IDC still expects the U.S. to remain the largest market in 2011, with 73.5 million units forecast to be shipped in the U.S. versus 72.4 million in China. Similarly, holiday season buying in the U.S. will likely keep it ahead of China in the fourth quarter, especially as China's market contracts after its third quarter summer promotions. IDC does not expect China to exceed the U.S. in full year shipments until 2012, when 85.2 million units are forecast to be shipped in China and 76.6 million units in the U.S. - China Surpassed the United States to Become the Largest PC Market in the World in the Second Quarter of 2011, According to IDC

CO2 er kanskje en bedre vekstindikator enn BNP:

The Sydney Morning Herald, October 8, 2011: A new study by the Netherlands Environment Assessment Agency shows China now emits far more greenhouse emissions than any other country, with emissions doubling between 2003 and 2010. China's carbon emissions rose 10 per cent last year alone, to 9 billion tonnes, compared with 5.2 billion tonnes for the United States. The report showed India's emissions also rose rapidly, by 9 per cent, although its total emissions are still only one-fifth of China's. The most startling finding, however, is that China's per capita emissions are now higher than several rich nations including France and Italy. China's per capita emissions could even overtake the US within six years, the study said - Chinese sceptics see global warming as US conspiracy

The Telegraph, January 17, 2012: China's urban population now exceeds the number of rural dwellers for first time in its history, the country's National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said on Tuesday. Just over 680 million now live in cities – 51.27 per cent of China's entire population of nearly 1.35 billion. Most have moved during two decades of boom in search of economic opportunities, and the historic mass migration from fields to office and apartment blocks ends the country's centuries-long agrarian status - China's urban population exceeds rural for first time ever

The HKEx, which has the Chinese government as its largest shareholder, beat off competition from the US-listed Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) in a closely fought battle.
